Job Description Department: Nursing Title: Head Nurse OBY/GYN
Reports to:
Area Supervisor,
House supervisor.
Accountable to:
Area Supervisor, House supervisor, DON, ADON.
Job Summary:
The OBY/GYN
Head nurse supervises and coordinates, and evaluates
a variety of nursing activities in delivery room, and gynecology floor, and nursery,
to effectively provide high
quality OB/GYN services, she works collaboratively with the physicians and the
anesthesia health care providers in delivery room during normal delivery procedures,
and ensure a safe environment of care. She has a role in scrub duties performed
in delivery room.
Responsibilities and duties:
· Insure attendance and the punctuality of nursing staff,
according to (......) policy.
· Attend daily morning Endorsement; receive patients, floor
and equipment from the night shift.
· Supervise nursing activities in the delivery room, patient
floor, and nursery.
· Receive, coordinate and track all orders, diagnostic procedures, laboratory tests and investigations necessary for the patient to Ensuring the high quality of patient care and the efficiency of services.
· Oversee the
effective, efficient use of delivery room equipment’ and machines, by Accomplish
routine checks and monitor maintenance of all equipment in the floor.
· Make nurses duties and assignments with proper ratio depending
on acuity level of the patient, and staff knowledge and skills, and according to
(......) policy, to provide a
high Standards of care as part of hospital policy.
· Attend daily
patients’ rounds with assigned staff to ensure that staff implements all nursing
procedures, duties, and patients
care is carried out as directed in accordance with physician's instructions.
· Monitor medication preparation, and administration, and ensure
safe protection of medications and narcotics according to (......) policy.
· Insure the correct application of sterilization
for all equipments in delivery room.
· Supervise effective use of identification of new
born babies after delivery process.
· Identifies emergency situations and institutes corrective
actions in efficient manner
· Request needed supplies and equipments for floor, and ensure downloading
of the supplies to insure effective, efficient use of equipment and materials.
· Supervise documentation of staff nurses, and insure accuracy of
medical record
· Coordinate admission, transfers of the patient in and out of the
floor with other departments, to insure continuity of care.
· He accompanies the doctor on visits and is informed about it Advance directives.
· Participate in specific unit orientation of new staff in the floor,
and learn new clinical practices, to insure safe practice for all nursing staff.
· Participate in monthly leadership committees and brief employees new problems.
· Investigates and resolves complaints and counseling of staff and
refers unusual problems to superior.
· Hold monthly staff meetings and keep a written record.
· Conduct an annual performance review and dry run of all employees. in cooperation with the care.
· bass Trial period and annual job evaluation of all employees, e.g Cooperation of the nursing education team.
· Assess employee learning needs and ongoing
planning Evaluation in cooperation with the education system department.
· Monitor the maintenance program of all medical equipments.
· Supervises all staff, including non-nursing staff assigned to
the floor.
· Provide guidance to her staff and counseling as required and document
same in nursing corrective action form.
· Support in strategic planning by providing information, especially in Resource planning.
Management Responsibilities:

Must know the objectives, vision and mission statement of (......).

Must strive for excellence in health care delivery through realization
of the objectives at floor level.
· Know and respect the lines of authority according to the nursing
organization structure.
·
Direct and supervise floor nurses effectively.
·
Has the authority to delegate her responsibilities to the AHN
when not on duty
Clinical Governance:
·
Ensure accurate documentation of all patient events and clinical
interventions.
·
Audit patient care daily to ensure compliance with clinical pathways.
·
Document and report all variances in expected clinical outcomes.
· Monitor, investigate and document all sentinel \events as part
of Risk Management and Patient Safety Indicators (PSI’s).
·
Have knowledge of the following policies / protocols:
1.
Infection control
2.
Disaster plan.
3.
Code Blue policy.
4.
Fire and safety (Evacuation plan).
5.
Monitor and take part
in disaster events.
Professional Development:
· Ensure compulsory educational lectures are attended
by self and staff in the floor (50 hrs of training).
· Attend management in-service lectures.
· Maintain current professional registration with
the Egyptian Syndicate and/or registration body of country of origin.
· Practice nursing according to the
scope of practice defined by the Egyptian Syndicate and International Council of
Nurses.
Communication and Interpersonal skills:
·
Use the proper chain of command on all nursing related matter
according the nursing organizational chart.
· Investigates and resolves complaints, and Communicate to Supervisors
problems experienced at floor level with staff, patients, and visitors and propose
remedial action.
·
have good interpersonal relationship with other departments
·
Promote effective working relationship between floor staff and
support services staff.
·
Follow-up on identified security problems.
·
Must have critical thinking and problem solving Resolution Capabilities.
Qualification:
Professional Requirements:
· Must be registered with the Egyptian Union of Nurses or Nurses Council or association in the country of origin.
· Must practice nursing within the scope of practice
as determined by the Egyptian Syndicate and International Council of Nurses (ICN).
Education:
·
BSN, Technical
Institute or Diploma Nurse
·
With 3-5
years experience
Experience:
·
At least
2-3 years experience as Head Nurse or assistant head nurse or charge nurse in the
same area of specialty.
Skills:
· Good English skill is important.
· Good communication skills and computer literacy.
· Ability to liaise and co-ordinate effectively.
· Critical thinking skills are necessary.
Training:
·
Must attend
50 hrs of mandatory in-service training in a contractual year.
·
Uphold and
support the mission statement and vision of (......).
·
BLS certification
is mandatory.
·
PALS &ACLS
is preferred.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
·
Follow the
appropriate communication channels according to the Department organizational chart.
·
Must be able
to communicate effectively both verbally and in person write.

Being able to communicate with other healthcare team members and Support
services for effective and efficient patient care.
